Facades of MG Road,
Pune

M G road, Pune-is a fusion of cultures, distinct character, architecture and of course people. The main street is known for its quaint old buildings reflecting in cross culture. The facades’ facing the street fascinates one to explore the old charm of the buildings. As the obliterations of these old structures and fading charisma of the street, had the studio’s interest in making these facades into architectural archive.

Walking along the street, trying to analyze and trace the structure visually we (Harshad Rathod, Sai Sharanya Satoor, Rishabh Jain, V Sukan and Himashiny Sukumar) studied the old buildings and the M.G. road street. As most of these buildings are occupied, the study was limited to the facades facing the street due to the time allocated. Migration of various ethnicities has brought significance to these edifices. The colored buildings, varied patterns of bricks, windows, doors, balustrades etc. gives an image of itself to this avenue. Our team was engrossed in capturing the facades in different ways (sketches, water coloring, photographs, and illustrations) and hence documenting them.

The research being a long term process, the studio desires to bring different perception of envisioning and documentation by the students. This course is not only a study but can be used for context specific design development, as a reference for the future and relate to historic bygone. Hence, to restore the building forms through drawings.
